Because we usually ran Petty equipment, we ran the same set up as Richard Petty generally when at a Cup event. Petty Enterprises was our supply line for most of our Winston West NASCAR series equipment.
Competing with Richard and “the guys” was a bit tougher than the west coast regulars. Using Petty equipment was a pleasure, always the best thing going. But, Richard was never free with “all” the information. Recently on a trip to North Carolina where I met up with Tex Powell, a former Petty employee, I found out about one small secret that was going on for a couple of years, probably gave them as much as a half a second on a speedway. Darn those guys, they always have something up their sleeve. Not just Petty but all of the east coast guys ran good. Most had good engine programs and specific chassis shops that built their cars, rare in those days but very common now to have a race car for a specific track.
