Olympia Charger races at Monza (Italy)

Team_oly_exp_monza
To say that we had a great week-end would almost be an understatement. Monza was a blast! The car had its troubles with the brakes, but performed very well thanks to our pit crews relentless efforts and ingenuity.

More about the other Olympia Dodge

Rayelder1972goldenstate400
Thanks to you readers, our Oly Express Blog is getting better every day. How? Here is a great example: Dennis Garrett from Virginia sent us this official Olympia Brewery picture of Ray Elder's Dodge. Like Hershel McGriff, Ray Elder was sponsored by Tumwater's famous brewery. It is our pleasure to publish it here for all of you... or should we say, y'all ?

More 1976 Photos of the Oly Express Dodge

Cettour_aco_pesage_1976 Great things just keep happening around the Olympia Charger. I received today the reprints of half a dozen black and white shots from 1976. Eric Cettour, a fan who met us in the pits during Le Mans Classic, sent me these. The one on the left shows his father, an ACO scrutineer in those days, checking out the Charger at the famous Place des Jacobins! The picture below shows the whole crew around the car in the same spot!

Oly Express at Olympia Fire Department

Olympia_fire_deptBefore going on with our test day reporting, we would like to share with you our Saturday visit to the Olympia Fire Department. Thanks to fireman Dave Haag, our Charger could be diplayed in front of a big fire engine to the crew on duty. Since the lettering on our Charger and on the fire trucks are the same, this made a great scenery, as you can see here.

Le Mans Charger hits Olympia streets

Express_in_downtown_olympia

Dick, Sally and Kevin (in the red team shirts) took the Charger for display in front of the 4th Ave Alehouse, owned by Scott & Debbie Staples, on Saturday March 25, 2006. Olympians had a chance to check out the reborn Oly Express Charger and could enjoy a cool Olympia beer inside the pub. Cheers!

1st track outing of rebuilt Oly Express

Dodge_charger_pace_carWe showed our racecar to the public at the season opener of South Sound Speedway. Dick Pierson, Sally Sandger, Kevin Pierson and Randy Knighton took the Charger to the track for a few laps. Beside assessing that everything is tight and working during his runs on the 3/8 mile track, Dick also autographed pictures of the newly rebuilt Oly Express for the fans!

The other Olympia Dodge: #96 Ray Elder

Ray_elder_dodgeNext to the McGriff's, Ray Elder was also sponsored by Olympia Beer. Know as the 'racing farmer" from Carruth, California, Elder raced all sorts of Dodge Chargers, like the 1966 fastback, the 1969 Daytona and the 1974 coke bottle shaped model. Like Herschel McGriff and Jim Insolo, Ray Elder also made a few excursions from Winston West to the Grand National circuit during the seventies. Since 1976, he is the last Winston West Champion to win it in a Dodge Charger. I just wonder why the pit crew is still in their pyjamas!

Dick Pierson, Driver

Dick_piersonDick Pierson was already working on the Olympia Charger, even before Le Mans Classic came into life. That is no wonder, because Dick was on the original crew of Herschel McGriff in the seventies. Since then, he made a very succesfull career as a real estate agent in Olympia and Puget Sound, WA.

Olympia Beer Bronco Off Roader

Oly_bronco Next to the Charger and Hershel McGriff's Nova and Chevelle, Olympia sponsored also the famous Stroppe/Jones Ford Bronco. Built by Stock Car specialist Bill Stroppe (aka the "Holman Moody of the West Coast"), it was entered at the gruelsome Baja California off road race. Parnelli Jones took over the driving chores, while Bill Stroppe himself acted as navigator. Olympia Beer sponsored the whole act of what was, as vintage expert Sam Barer calls it, the "Superbird of Off-Road Racing"!

Read more about it on the Baja Bronco website!
